SILO WRAP COMMISSION
Celebrating ancient navigational history, the new silo wrap design was inspired by narrative that relates both to the locational connections to the moana & also to the current @americascup event within Tāmaki Makaurau.
With the blessing of @haunuiwaka to use the image as a key graphic that is understandable to the tamariki playing nearby, the design reminds us that sailing has long been in the DNA of the city & the people who first settled on these shores. After an encouraging board meeting with TAG (technical advisory group) it was agreed upon to remove all English translations for the first time to champion te reo Māori unapologetic about presenting the beauty of our native tongue to a global audience. The manu were hand painted by @charles_phat1tmd, scanned & included into the larger digital work wrap design, first attempted as a vinyl but later changed to a material banner due to adhesion challenges. The final design was tweeked to allow the viewer from the waka to see the larger toroa & to follow it to shore as if the silo was a welcoming pou on the journey to land again. Thank you to @aklcouncil #manawhenua #panuku #TAG for their support in making this happen!
